It is necessary

    • onions - 700 grams,
    • butter - 100 grams,
    • flour - 1-2 tablespoons,
    • garlic - 4 cloves,
    • sugar - 1/2 teaspoon
    • broth - 1 liter,
    • dry white wine - 300 milliliters,
    • salt,
    • ground black pepper
    • French baguette,
    • butter or olive oil - 50 grams,
    • cheddar or gruyere cheese - 250-300 grams.

Instructions

Step 1

Prepare broth in advance. It can be meat, chicken or vegetable. If the time for making the soup is short, then the broth can be replaced with plain water.

Step 2

The onions must be peeled and cut into thin half rings.

Step 3

Melt the butter in a heavy-bottomed metal or fireproof glass saucepan over low heat. Add sugar and onions. Saute the onions for half an hour under the lid.

Step 4

After 30 minutes, increase the heat, remove the lid and fry the onions, stirring constantly. The onion should take on a golden hue.

Step 5

Add flour and finely chopped garlic (2-3 cloves) to the onion, mix thoroughly. Simmer for 1-2 minutes.

Step 6

Pour hot broth and warmed wine into a saucepan, add salt and black pepper. Bring the soup to a boil.

Step 7

As soon as the soup boils, you need to reduce the heat to a minimum and cook for 30-40 minutes.

Step 8

While the soup is cooking, prepare the croutons. Cut the baguette into pieces. Grease a baking sheet with melted butter or olive oil. Place the pieces of baguette on a baking sheet and turn over so that each side is soaked in oil.

Step 9

Put a baking sheet in an oven preheated to 200 degrees and bake pieces of baguette until golden brown for 10-20 minutes.

Step 10

Grate the cheese on a coarse grater.

Step 11

Rub the prepared croutons on both sides with the remaining cloves of garlic.

Step 12

Heat a tureen or earthenware pot. Pour the soup into a cooked bowl. Place a crouton on top, sprinkle it with a thick layer of cheese.

Step 13

Place the portioned dishes in an oven preheated to 200 degrees and leave to bake (preferably under the grill) until the cheese acquires a golden brown hue.

Step 14

Once the cheese is ready, serve the French Onion Soup on the table. Bon Appetit!
