The famous Black Russian cocktail belongs to the digestives that are consumed after meals for good digestion. As bartenders like to joke, this strong drink can knock a bear down. According to legend, it even got its name in honor of a brown resident of the Russian forest, whom a foreign bartender once met while hunting. Traditionally, "Black Russian" is prepared from high-grade vodka and coffee liqueur Kahlua ("Kahlua").
Cocktail "Black Russian": a classic recipe
To make a real "Black Russian", you need to purchase the traditional Kahlua liqueur from the Pernod Ricard company, made on the basis of Mexican Arabica. This aromatic alcoholic drink drowns out the strength of vodka and gives the cocktail an original, memorable taste and characteristic aroma.
According to the accepted tradition, the Black Russian cocktail contains 7/10 parts of high-grade vodka and 3/10 parts of coffee liqueur. A special old-fashioned thick-bottomed glass must be pre-cooled, after which crushed ice should be placed in it and first pour in "Kahlua", then - vodka. Stirring an alcoholic drink is not recommended.
"Black Russian" is called the ancestor of coffee cocktails. It is believed that for the first time in 1949 it was made by the Belgian bartender Gustave Top, who was then working in the Metropol Hotel in Brussels.
The strength of the cocktail can be adjusted. So, a mixture of liquor and vodka in proportions of 1: 1 is very popular. In this case, 4 ice cubes and 40 ml of Russian alcohol and Kalua will be enough for one serving. To prepare a decent portion of the drink, it is permissible to use a shaker. You can decorate an old-fashioned glass with a lime or lemon circle cut on one side.
Metamorphoses of the "Black Russian"
Since its inception, the world-famous recipe for the "Black Russian" cocktail has undergone many changes. So, among modern bartenders it is customary to mix Russian vodka with green mint liqueur Creme de menthe (with cognac in the composition), getting the so-called Green Russian cocktail at the exit. When replacing coffee "Kahlua" with cherry liqueur Cherry Brandy, you can treat yourself to a strong "Red Russian" alcoholic drink.
The modern series of Kahlua liqueurs with various additives allows you to add certain flavor nuances to the recipe. In addition to the traditional one, today the shops sell liqueurs with the taste of espresso, vanilla, chocolate, hazelnuts.
It is enough to decorate the traditional blend of coffee liqueur and vodka with whipped cream, and "Black Russian" turns into "White Russian" - a popular drink with its own history. Using the famous recipes of the best bartenders, at home you can whitewash a coffee cocktail not only with cream, but also with goat or skim milk, Baileys liqueur, and horchata almond drink. It is permissible to replace vodka with rum. Strictly speaking, when you make changes to the recipe for "Black Russian" you will get no less original and strong, but completely different cocktail.
