Types of thermometers for drinks

There is some variety in the kitchen thermometer industry today. So, in particular, on the shelves of specialized stores you can find metal, liquid and electronic (digital) thermometers. Let's start with the simplest - liquid. The principle of their operation is known to almost everyone - when heated, the liquid inside the tube of the device begins to expand and rises up the scale. Most often, mercury is used in liquid thermometers, but in the kitchen it is extremely dangerous, therefore all such devices for liquids are alcohol-based. Most often, these thermometers are used for baby food - surgical precision is not required here.

Electronic thermometers work on the principle of changing resistance at different temperatures. At the heart of most of these devices is a thermistor, which shows a certain value when current passes through it. Then the data is fed into the microcomputer and compared with the temperature table. On the screen, you see the finished result. It is electronic sensors that experienced connoisseurs and winemakers most often decorate their wine bottles with.

The measuring device in a metal thermometer is a strip of two different metals held together. As you know, different metals have different thermal conductivity and expand at different rates. When the temperature changes, the coefficient of expansion of the strip is transmitted to a meter connected to a scale showing the temperature of the drink.

What are we going to check?

Most often, drink thermometers are purchased for two purposes: to measure the temperature of a wine or to control the optimal temperature of baby products. It should be noted that if it is theoretically possible to find out milk or tea for a child using an ordinary kitchen multifunctional thermometer, then it is better to test the wine with a device specially adapted for this. Of course, not every mother is ready to measure the temperature of infant formula with the same thermometer that she uses to cook fried meat. That is why today you can find special children's thermometers in children's stores and pharmacies.

We should also mention thermometers that are used in cheese making. If, suddenly, you are looking for a device specifically for measuring liquids at a home cheese dairy, it is best to choose a thermometer with a long metal probe and a body that will not break even if dropped into a container with whey.
