Pita is an unleavened flatbread that is very popular in the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean countries. The first mentions of it are found in the Old Testament, while today pita is a hollow loaf used to prepare a variety of dishes, including pizza.
Cooking pita
To make pita at home, sift 1 kilogram of flour into a mixer bowl and stir it at low speed, gradually adding 2 teaspoons of sugar and 2 teaspoons of salt to the flour. After the flour is well mixed with salt and sugar, you need to add 1.5 teaspoons of dry yeast to it and mix thoroughly again. Then, without stopping stirring, about 600 ml of warm water should be poured into the flour and kneaded at low speed until a dough of a uniform consistency, after which 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil are poured into the mixer and the dough continues to knead for 10 minutes.
The prepared dough should be placed in a large container and covered with a slightly damp towel / cling film. In the process of raising the pita dough, it should at least double in volume (at room temperature in an hour and a half). After that, it must be folded several times and left in the container again, covered for twenty to thirty minutes.
Then the dough is kneaded, divided into four parts, each part is rolled into a ball and once again the resulting balls are divided into four parts. The result is sixteen equal pieces of dough, which must be covered and left for ten minutes, after which each of them is rolled into a ball and rolled into a cake, the diameter of which is fifteen centimeters.
Baking pita and pizza
Prepared pits should be laid out on a baking sheet lined with food paper and placed in an oven preheated to 250 degrees for five to six minutes. Baking should be finished when the pits are slightly dry - they should not be golden brown and hard. The finished cakes must be removed from the oven, placed on a wooden board, covered with a towel and cooled slightly.
To make a pizza, you will need 1 pita, 1 teaspoon of olive oil, 3 tablespoons of tomato pizza sauce, 2 sliced mushrooms, ½ cup grated cheese and 1/8 teaspoon of any seasoning. Pizza with pita bread can be cooked not only in the oven, but also in a well-heated grill.
Grease one side of the pita with pizza sauce and olive oil, sprinkle with mushrooms and grated cheese, season with your favorite seasoning or dry garlic and place on the wire rack of the oven preheated to 400 degrees. Bake the pizza for seven minutes, until the cheese is melted and browned.
