According to the rules of bar etiquette, each alcoholic cocktail must be served in a glass specially created for it. A properly selected container for the drink will help to serve it effectively and maximize its taste.

Shot

The most common meanings of the English word "Shot" in translation into Russian sound like "shot" or "volley". As the name implies, this type of glasses is intended for drinks that are consumed quickly, i.e. in one gulp. Shots look like small vodka glasses, with just enough liquid for one sip. Usually these are very strong alcoholic drinks containing vodka or absinthe.

For example, here are some recipes for shots:

  • Flag of Russia shot: Grenadine syrup, Blue Curacao liqueur and vodka are taken in equal proportions. The ingredients are carefully poured into the Shot in layers using a special spoon and do not mix.
  • Shot "Boyarsky": take Grenadine syrup (20 ml), hot pepper Tabasco sauce (a few drops) and vodka (40 ml). As in the previous recipe, the ingredients are carefully poured into the Shot in layers and do not stir.
  • Shot "Barbie": vodka, coconut rum, cranberry juice and orange juice are mixed with each other in equal proportions. All ingredients must be mixed with ice and shaken using a special shaker.

Old fashioned

Old Fashion pays tribute to old traditions. This glass has a fairly simple rectangular shape and a very thick bottom. Sometimes the glass is faceted, and sometimes a pattern is carved on the surface of the glass. This container serves classic whiskey, aperitif drinks or Old Fashion cocktails of the same name with a glass.

To prepare Old Fashion you will need: bourbon (50 ml), sugar cubes (1 pc), angostura (a couple of drops), an orange and a cocktail cherry. Cut the orange into wedges, and place one in the bottom of the glass. Saturate a sugar cube with angostura, place on an orange slice and crush a little, add an ice cube. Pour bourbon into a glass and stir gently. Garnish with cocktail cherry and orange zest.

Collins

Collins is a tall and narrow glass designed for "long" drinks, ie. those who are not drunk in one sitting (long drink). Soft drinks like lemonade or freshly squeezed juice are often poured into such containers, but alcoholic mixes did not bypass him either.

The Collins glass often serves a Tom Collins cocktail. To prepare it, you need to mix 50 ml of gin, 50 ml of sugar syrup and the juice of a quarter of a lemon. Pour all the ingredients into a container and fill with plain sparkling water to the brim (about 15-20 ml). Garnish with lemon zest or cocktail cherries.

Highball

A highball glass is a medium-high glass that gradually expands towards the neck. It usually mixes simple cocktails that include a portion of a strong alcoholic beverage and a portion of a non-alcoholic beverage.

For example, the Kalimocho cocktail is very popular and easy to prepare: you need to mix dry red wine and cola in equal proportions, garnish with ice cubes and citrus slices.

Martini glass

An elegant cone-shaped glass with a long and thin stem. It serves alcoholic drinks of the company of the same name and cocktails based on vermouth. Martini glass looks so impressive that characters from many popular films have long chosen it. The most important thing when serving drinks in this glass is the pre-freezing (or long-term cooling) of the Martini glass and the absence of ice in it. Ice in a cone-shaped glass does not look very nice and can spoil the taste of the main ingredients.

For example, here's a James Bond cocktail recipe: 75 ml of vodka and 15 ml of vermouth. Place a few frozen pitted green olives in the bottom of a chilled glass, top with the above ingredients and garnish with a lemon wedge if desired.

Margarita glass

Margarita glasses are a bit like Martini glasses. They stand on the same elegant thin leg, but the shape of the main container is very different from the above-mentioned cone-shaped Martini glass. This glass has a depression in the middle. Just like in a martini, all the ingredients and the glass itself are pre-cooled and no ice cubes are used. In glasses of the Margarita type, strong tequila-based cocktails are most often served.

The recipe for the classic Margarita: Dip the edges of the glass in water and then in salt. Mix tequila (35 ml), Cointreau (20 ml), lemon juice (35 ml) and ice cubes in a shaker, gently pour the cocktail into a glass. Serve with a wedge of lime, lemon or cucumber.

Hurricane

Translated from English, the name Hurricane sounds like "Hurricane". It stands on a short stem, and its container has a large spherical base with a neck expanding upward.

The famous cocktail with the beautiful name "Blue Lagoon" is served in a glass of Hariken. To prepare it, you need to fill a glass with ice cubes, pour 20 ml of Blue Curacao liqueur, 50 ml of vodka into it and add sprite to the brim. You can decorate the drink with straws, umbrellas and pieces of fruit (a slice of orange, a skewer with a cocktail cherry, a slice of pineapple. The more bright decorations on the glass, the better, because the cocktail is intended mainly for female representatives).

Pousse-cafe

A small, slightly elongated glass on a short stem. It serves sweet and strong liqueurs, but there is one more specific purpose - it was created to effectively serve multi-layered cocktails. It differs from a shot by a slightly larger volume and height.

There are a great many layered cocktails, but they are all united by one rule: the ingredients must differ from each other in density, the densest liquids are poured to the bottom of the glass. The ingredients are not stirred. For example, liqueurs and sugary syrups tend to have a thicker consistency and are poured at the very bottom. At the very top is usually vodka or absinthe, the lightest liquids by weight. For example, by pouring Grenadine syrup, Sambuca liqueur and absinthe into a pus cafe, you will get a beautiful multi-layered cocktail "Italian flag".

Irish Coffee mug

The name of the glass speaks for itself. Irish Coffee mug is designed to serve Irish coffee (Irish coffee), a drink based on strong coffee and whiskey. It combines the characteristics of alcoholic beverage containers (wide flat stem) and coffee mugs (simple cylindrical shape and handle).

Brew a strong black coffee. Pour 45 ml of whiskey mixed with 2 teaspoons of sugar into a special glass, pour hot coffee almost to the brim. Top with soft whipped cream foam. Garnish with chocolate chips or coffee beans, if desired.

Snifter glass

This is the most "pot-bellied" of all cocktail glasses. It has a spherical shape with a neck tapering upwards and a very wide, short stem. They serve strong alcoholic drinks such as brandy or pure cognac. But there are also several cocktails, mainly based on cognac, that are suitable for such an unusual shape.

In a glass snifter serves quite simple but strong cocktails, most suitable for a male audience. For example, you can mix cognac, chocolate liqueur and heavy cream in equal amounts, and you get the Alexander cocktail. Mixing 60 ml of cognac, 30 ml of citrus infusion and 1 tsp. sugar, you get a fragrant cocktail "Orange Rhapsody". There are even simpler recipes with only two ingredients, for example, the Sting Cognac cocktail recipe includes only 1 part mint liqueur and 2 parts cognac.
