Honey is incredibly useful, everyone knows about it. But in stores, it is usually sold in plastic containers. Can honey be kept in plastic containers, or is such honey dangerous? How not to harm yourself and buy a really high-quality product.
How to know if a plastic container is suitable for storing honey
As you know, plastic is different. If you see honey in a plastic container on a shelf in a supermarket, first of all make sure that the container is designed for storing food. It should have a corresponding inscription and a drawing on which a glass with a fork is drawn.
The marking must be PP, PP or 5. This marking confirms that the container in which the honey is poured is made of polypropylene. Polypropylene is quite safe and stable, therefore it is suitable for storing honey.
Storage conditions for honey in plastic containers
After you have made sure that the container is suitable for storing honey, you need to provide honey with the necessary conditions to keep all the nutrients in it and not make it hazardous to health.
- Never store honey in an open container, as it oxidizes and loses all its nutrients and deteriorates. From the container, transfer the required amount of honey to a hermetically sealed jar, and put the rest back, tightly closing.
- The smaller the air space between the surface of the honey and the lid, the better. Therefore, it is better to pour or purchase small containers.
- To prevent honey from fermenting, you need to store it without access to moisture, which it perfectly absorbs from the air.
- Do not store honey where there are strong odors. It absorbs them instantly.
All of the above problems will be solved by sealed packaging.
- The optimum temperature for storing honey is from -5 to +20 degrees Celsius. When the temperature rises above 20 degrees, honey begins to change its taste, and if the temperature rises above 40, the beneficial properties disappear. That is why honey should not be heated.
- Honey must be stored in a dark room, it does not like light. Even the light from a kitchen light will affect the amount of nutrients. Therefore, if you plan to store it in a transparent plastic container, be so kind as to put it in a closet, where the light will enter only when you come for another jar of honey.
- It is recommended to store honey in plastic no more than 12 months. Then the beneficial properties begin to be lost, and it is better to stock up on a new batch of fresh honey.
